Denise Richards Opens Up About Facing Trauma on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test
Denise Richards is candidly addressing the long-term impact of trauma as she navigates extreme challenges on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. The 53-year-old actress confronted her fears during the season 3 premiere on January 8, where she and her fellow trainees faced a grueling helicopter extraction task.
The challenge, inspired by real Army Special Forces selection procedures, required participants to leap from a boat onto a hovering helicopter and pull themselves into the cabin. For Richards, the high-stakes exercise prompted reflections on her past.
“I really want to learn how to not be overwhelmed by fear,” Richards shared. “I’ve been through traumatic situations that have been very terrifying for me. I want to learn how to deal with those issues and be stronger.”
Despite her determination, Richards was unable to complete the task, struggling to pull herself into the helicopter. After noticing her visibly tense demeanor, the Directing Staff (DS) brought her in for a conversation.
“You had a deer-in-the-headlights kind of look,” one of the instructors observed. Richards admitted, “It’s hard. I’m completely out of my comfort zone… I’m not petrified. I’m emotional right now.”
The DS pointed out that she appeared to “freeze” during the exercise, to which Richards agreed. “Yes, I’m completely overcome by certain fearful situations, and I want to learn how to stay calm and do something,” she responded.
Richards elaborated further on why she joined the show, revealing a personal motivation tied to her past experiences. “Part of the reason I wanted to do this course is I’ve been in situations where I freeze, and I can’t function. I can’t even speak to protect myself,” she explained.
Through her time on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, Richards hopes to build resilience and overcome the fear that has held her back in the past.
Her candid reflections highlight the emotional depth behind her decision to take on the physically and mentally taxing challenges of the show. As Richards continues on her journey, viewers are given a glimpse into her vulnerability and determination to grow stronger.
