Selena Gomez has opened up about a major career decision following her experience filming Emilia Pérez, signaling a potential shift away from music to focus more on acting. Speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 9, the Only Murders in the Building star reflected on her time working on the Jacques Audiard-directed film and how it influenced her future in entertainment.
“I think movies and art-making and being around such incredible, talented people that have done nothing but uplift me along the way… I don’t know,” Gomez, 32, said in an interview with Access Hollywood. She went on to share that the experience had a profound impact on her, making her reconsider her career priorities.

“It’s going to be very hard for me to ever go back to music after this magical experience,” Gomez admitted. While she has found success in both music and acting, Gomez suggested that her time on Emilia Pérez was transformative, potentially steering her toward a full-time focus on film and television.
The singer-turned-actress also revealed that she has only watched the movie once—when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. “I watched in Cannes and then I started to watch it with my family and I got nervous, you know because my grandparents were seeing me say some stuff,” she recalled.

Despite her hesitation, Gomez noted that her grandparents have since made a habit of playing the film. “They continue to casually throw [the movie] on in the background,” she said with a laugh. During the conversation, Gomez also addressed the controversy surrounding her co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, admitting that it had affected her memories of the film.

“Some of the magic has disappeared,” she remarked. Nonetheless, she described the filming process as deeply rewarding. “It was actually very cathartic,” Gomez said of the experience.
While she has yet to officially step away from music, Gomez’s comments suggest that her future may lean more heavily toward acting. Fans will have to wait and see if Emilia Pérez marks a permanent turning point in her career.
