The Justice Department’s decision to drop a sweeping corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams has sparked an immediate backlash, with political and legal observers flooding social media with accusations of favoritism and corruption.
The bombshell development came Monday when a senior Trump administration DOJ official abruptly ordered government attorneys to withdraw all charges against Adams. The decision, coming less than a month after Donald Trump returned to the White House, has fueled widespread speculation about political interference.

“This isn’t justice,” Democratic strategist Chris D. Jackson wrote on X. “This is corruption in plain sight. The rule of law is officially dead.” The decision raised eyebrows, particularly given Adams’ recent efforts to build closer ties with Trump, prompting some to question whether his newfound alliance played a role in the case’s dismissal.
“Of all of NYC’s corrupt mayors, Eric Adams may be the most corrupt,” Mashable reporter Matt Binder posted. “But corruption pays off under Trump.” Daily Beast columnist Wajahat Ali also voiced skepticism, asking his Bluesky followers: “What did Eric Adams give up to Trump?” One user responded, “All the immigrants in NYC.”

The theory that Adams may have traded political favors for leniency quickly gained traction among observers. “Eric Adams pretty much agreed to sidestep NY sanctuary protections, & make his city’s immigrant residents more vulnerable to ICE, in pursuit of naked personal gain & a shield from corruption charges,” journalist Daniel Nichanian, editor-in-chief of Bolts, wrote on Bluesky.

New York State Sen. Jessica Ramos, a Democratic mayoral candidate, did not hold back in her criticism. “Eric Adams sold out New Yorkers to buy his own freedom, but he’ll never escape the label of worst mayor in NYC history,” Ramos said on X. “Donald Trump may think this buys him access to terrorize our communities, but New Yorkers always stand up for one another, no matter how many corrupt narcissists try to hurt our families.”
Andrew Jennings, a corporate and securities law professor at Emory University, pointed blame at New York’s governor. “Every day that Eric Adams spends in office until his term is up in January is on Kathy Hochul,” he wrote on Bluesky.
Former Republican strategist Rick Wilson weighed in as well, calling Adams “the most lavishly corrupt NYC mayor in generations.” Artist Candee Corliss echoed the frustration, writing on X: “Donald Trump’s DOJ is dropping the corruption charges against disgraced New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Birds of a feather. Shameful stuff.”
With critics raising alarms over the Justice Department’s decision, questions remain about what led to the sudden dismissal and whether Adams’ political maneuvering played a role in his legal reprieve.
