Meghan Markle Accused of Grandstanding After Sharing Billie Eilish Charity Gesture

Meghan Markle has come under scrutiny once again after posting a video showcasing her efforts to help a fire victim with a donation from pop star Billie Eilish. In a recent Instagram reel, the Duchess of Sussex shared how she reached out to the singer, who then sent signed merchandise to a 15-year-old girl whose home was destroyed in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Meghan detailed how she first met the girl’s mother while visiting a fire-affected community, and she expressed her joy at being able to deliver Eilish’s gift to the young victim. While some supporters praised Meghan for her kindness, others accused her of using the tragedy for publicity.
Critics argued that the video appeared more focused on self-promotion rather than highlighting the broader issue of wildfire recovery. Speaking to The Express, PR expert Renae Smith analyzed the potential impact of Meghan’s video, noting that while the act itself was generous, the optics of the situation could be problematic. “From a PR perspective, I’m not personally a fan of Meghan’s latest video,” Smith said.
“While I believe her actions were genuinely kind—she’s not a monster, after all—the issue here is all about perception.” The expert further explained that Meghan had recently faced backlash for allegedly making the LA fires about herself, and the new video could reinforce that narrative.
“She’s just come under fire (literally and figuratively) for being accused of making the LA fires about herself, and now this video, while well-intentioned, could easily be seen as grandstanding,” Smith added. Despite the controversy, Smith acknowledged that Meghan’s happiness in facilitating the donation appeared sincere.
“I do believe Meghan was genuinely happy about receiving the delivery and gifting the Billie Eilish merch to the girl affected by the fires,” she said. “But given her reputation and the existing narrative that she’s self-absorbed, posting a video like this only feeds into that perception.”
Smith also noted the delicate balance Meghan must navigate when using social media to connect with the public. “If her social media is meant to be authentic and unapologetically ‘her,’ then fine—it doesn’t necessarily help repair her reputation, but perhaps that’s not the goal,” she concluded.
As Meghan continues to redefine her public image outside the royal family, moments like these highlight the challenges she faces in striking the right balance between authenticity and public perception.
