NBC host Kristen Welker faced criticism after one of her questions during a Sunday interview with Donald Trump was deemed “deeply troubling” by elections expert Marc Elias. The interview, which aired over the weekend, featured Trump making several misleading claims, according to Rolling Stone.

Welker’s question focused on the 2020 election, asking Trump, “For the sake of unifying this country, will you concede the 2020 election and turn the page on that chapter?” The full transcript of the interview reveals Trump’s response: “No. No, why would I do that? But let me just tell you –” before he was cut off by the host.

Democracy Docket founder and elections attorney Marc Elias expressed his concern over Welker’s question. “This question from Kristen Welker was deeply troubling,” he said. Elias emphasized that Trump should have conceded the election, as he “lost,” and pointed to the lie surrounding the election as a significant contributor to the events of January 6 and the ongoing erosion of democracy.

“Donald Trump should concede the election because he lost because he lied and because that lie led to the events of January 6 and corroded our democracy,” he added.

Elias also hoped that Welker’s question was “just a misstep and not an effort to blur the truth to gain favor,” highlighting the importance of truth in political discourse. The moment quickly became a topic of ridicule online, particularly after Welker’s earlier live report mishap when she mistakenly referred to President Joe Biden by the wrong name.
