Angelina Jolie Says Hollywood ‘Is Not a Healthy Business,’ Offers Advice to Young Artists

Angelina Jolie has opened up about her experiences in Hollywood, describing the industry as “not a healthy business” while offering advice to young artists on maintaining a balance between their careers and personal lives.

In a candid interview with Variety, the Maleficent actress shared her perspective on how to approach the entertainment world, especially for those just starting out. Reflecting on a conversation with a young girl who asked for advice, Jolie emphasized the importance of living a full life beyond the career spotlight. “I often stress that it’s really important to live a very full life,” she explained.

She further advised, “There’s a lot to focus on just having a career – if you love theatre, you can do readings at home in your pajamas. You don’t have to get that job.” According to Jolie, young artists should find ways to embrace their art without solely chasing fame or job opportunities.

“Find the ways to just live as an artist, be around artists, but also live a very full life. It’s sometimes not a healthy business,” she added. Jolie, now 49, also discussed the tougher side of a career in the entertainment industry, acknowledging that it isn’t always kind to those who give everything for it.

“It’s not the easiest place, and it’s not where you should give everything if you’re living a full life,” she stated. The actress also reflected on her upcoming role as opera singer Maria Callas in a biographical film, recalling a pivotal moment early in her career when she was dismissed for her singing abilities.

“I had somebody once tell me I couldn’t sing or be a little dismissive when I was singing once, and it really shut me down,” Jolie recalled. “I never told anybody, but it was part of my life that I just blocked. Then when (Director) Pablo (Larrain) asked me to do this and asked me if I could sing, I lied.”

Jolie humorously added, “‘Can you ride a horse?’ ‘Yes.’ Obviously, nobody can sing like Maria. No one. But I’ll do my best.” This lighthearted approach reflects Jolie’s resilience and determination to embrace challenges in her career, despite past insecurities.
