President-elect Donald Trump dismissed accusations that he had reversed his position on the H1-B visa program, asserting consistency in his views during a press event ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“I didn’t change my mind,” Trump declared. “I always felt we have to have the most competent people in our country. We need competent people. We need smart people coming into our country. We need a lot of people coming in.”

Trump’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny from critics and supporters alike, particularly those in the MAGA movement, who recall his earlier hardline stance on the program. During his 2016 campaign, Trump called for drastic reforms to the H1-B system, which allows companies to hire foreign workers in specialized fields such as technology.

“The H1-B program is neither high-skilled nor immigration: these are temporary workers, foreign workers, imported from abroad, for the explicit purpose of substituting for American workers at lower pay,” Trump said in a campaign statement at the time. He went on to criticize specific instances of alleged abuse, including reports from Disney in Florida where American employees were required to train their foreign replacements, told BBC.

“I remain totally committed to eliminating rampant, widespread H1-B abuse and ending outrageous practices,” he stated in 2016. “I will end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program. No exceptions.”

However, Trump’s recent rhetoric has softened, aligning more closely with tech leaders like Elon Musk, a staunch defender of the H1-B visa program. Musk has argued that the program is vital for attracting global talent and maintaining the United States’ competitive edge in innovation.

This shift has sparked tension within the MAGA community, where hard-right activists have criticized Musk and Trump’s apparent alignment with him on this issue. Former GOP strategist turned anti-Trump commentator Ron Filipkowski highlighted the apparent discrepancy, noting that Trump’s earlier stance on the H1-B program was a cornerstone of his campaign’s immigration platform.

As Trump prepares to take office, his statements about welcoming “smart people” and “competent people” into the country are being closely analyzed. Whether this signals a substantive policy change or a continuation of his past positions remains a contentious debate among his supporters and detractors.
